San Diego! This vlog is the first vlog in my San Diego Series. The main purpose of the trip was attending the Global Genes conference in September 2023, and I was joined on this trip by my longtime friend Camilla who you may recognize from other vlogs or my videos on TikTok and Instagram.
She always plays a memorable character in those clips! If you are new to the channel, I have a rare muscle disease, so for extended adventures I use my mobility scooter.
We departed Logan to go to San Diego airport, but not without paying our respects to one of the last standing Friendly's!
We left Boston in the afternoon, so we checked in the night before at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. The conference was held at the Marina Tower, but in order to assure a room with an accessible shower, we stayed at the Bay Tower. We gave a full tour of the hotel room, and a full review of our stay will come in another vlog. They are about a half mile apart, but there is a free (and accessible) shuttle that takes you between the two hotels. It is also a free shuttle to the airport, which is actually very close, so that explains why you will see a lot of flight staff staying at the hotel! We give a full room tour and then end the night getting some food at the Bay Tower Lounge - which is actually dog friendly! However, there were only humans there that night :(
The next day while I was at the conference, Camilla enjoyed a massage and trying a few food places. She gave her review of both!
After the conference we went out to the Gaslight District in San Diego. The city was super busy for a Tuesday night! We went to the American Comedy Company for a free open mic night. In the vlog, I said I was happy that the disabled jokes flopped and by that I meant the cheap jokes that weren't smart or funny. Disability jokes can be funny when they are actually funny and not just meant to make fun of people. Case in point, one of the comics at the open mic was Alan Henderson @ComedyByAlan (same username on Insta), and his jokes about disability were funny! I am definitely going to check out his other material.
Next, I got my signature spaghetti with tomato sauce from Pizza on 5th - Pizza Lounge and Bar. Honestly, the pasta wasn't my favorite. I'm not sure if the sauce was cheesy or what is was - like I have said I'm not a foodie! If I were to go back, I would try something else.
Overall, I was impressed with the accessibility of San Diego so far!
